Précis and commentary of the Will of
mary CROMPTON
of Hounslow, Middlesex
Dated 03 April 1632
Overview
- This is a simple will distributing various rings and a quilt to named children and a sum of
money to her grandchildren, servants and the poor of Hounslow.
Précis
The will lists her children, daughter-in-law and cousins as living in 1632:
- Robert Crompton, and daughters
- Mary - Dame Mary Gee;
- Frances - Frances Fenn;
- Alice - Alice Colenton(?) 1.
- her daughter-in-law Dame Catherine, the child of her eldest son, Sir Thomas and the wife of Sir Thomas Lyttelton
(Littleton/Littelton) of Wigorn, First Baron of Frankley, who died 24 June 1666 and whose
memorial is in Worcester Cathedral;
- cousins Mary Wallis; and one whose name cannot be transcribed.
Specific requests, from the residue of the estate, were to be made to her grandchildren on their
majority; the
children of:
- the previously named Robert Crompton, Dame Mary Gee, Frances Fenn and Alice Colenton(?);
- Sir John Crompton, who is identified as deceased;
- daughters Elizabeth Hyatt, Magdalene Roger and Grace Hrobald(?), who, not being named as individual
beneficiaries, are assumed to be dead;
- Grandson William Gee is the only named grandchild, also named as an Executor;
- each grandchild was to receive £10 from any residue after debts and funeral expenses on the
understanding that they do not request any further cash from the estate.
Gifts of money are made to her well respected servants:
- £5 to John {Ke.fir} (equivalent to £23,090 in 2018 2);
- £1 apiece to those who are living with her in the house of death (equivalent to £4,618 in
2018); and
- £2 to the poor of Hounslow (equivalent to £9,235 in 2018).
The will mentions many rings and a studied quilt as gifts, but does not mention any property and only mention household plate in passing.
