1811 Info 2e for Elizabeth Crompton
Martha Amelia Brignell Foster and Charles Thomas

Martha Amelia Brignell FOSTER was the first child of Paulina and James FOSTER.  She was born in the second quarter of 1862 in Sculcoates, Hull. (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 180).

Paulina, widowed in 1865, married Edmund HYLDON. In the 1871 census Paulina and Edmund HYLDON were travelling the highways maintaining government telegraph with Paulina's second child Madalina. The 1871 census also shows Paulina had left her eldest daughter Martha Amelia FOSTER with her aunt Sophia HORNSEY/JOSEPHS. Perhaps, there was no room in the caravan for Martha Amelia FOSTER?

Amelia Foster Niece 10 Yorks, Hull

There is an enumeration error. Frederick's age was originally placed in the female column, aged 10, and then crossed out. It appears to be confused with Amelia.

A map of Cross Street, Stockton 1899 - 106kB jpg Between 1871 and 1879 Martha had migrated to the Stockton area where, in the March quarter of 1879, Martha Amelia FOSTER married Charles THOMAS (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 75).

Charles THOMAS was born in the first quarter of 1860. (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 67) The couple first lived with Charles' widowed father in a five family ' tenement', adjacent to a Stockton warehouse.

The 1899 map shows that Cross Street was between Bishop Street and Silver Street. As can be seen from the photograph the area has been redeveloped. However, it is possible that the Brown's arch is on the old Cross Street footprint.

The 1891 census shows that the Fosters had moved, with their three daughters, across Thistle Square, to their own home. Charles had changed his employment from 'jobbing cutler' to 'showman', perhaps hinting at a more nomadic life. The couple are known to have had four children:

It is possible that, after his wife's death in 1895, Charles THOMAS married, in the third quarter of 1896 (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 116), the much younger Elizabeth TAYLOR born in the first quarter of 1872 (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 89). They took to the roads in his caravan, being the final entry in the 1901 Enumerator's book. The caravan appears to have been parked in the region of Bonlea Foundry.

There being no children in the caravan supports the hypothesis that, like Lavinia, all four children had been dispersed.

Their children

Charles James THOMAS - first child of Charles and Amelia THOMAS

Charles James R THOMAS, born in the third quarter of 1880 (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 86), does not appear in the 1891 census when he should have been 11. There is no evidence of his early death between 1880 and 1891 nor between 1891 and 1930. There is no evidence of him in 1901 or 1911 census. A Charles THOMAS married Joanna KENNEDY in 1916 (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 139).

Paulina THOMAS - second child of Charles and Amelia THOMAS

Paulina THOMAS married James WHITEHEAD in the fourth quarter of 1900 (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 143).

In 1895 Lavinia's mother died. The 1901 census shows that Lavinia, their third child, was living with her Aunt Madalina COOK and grandmother Paulina CARISS.

Webster Street, Stockton 2009 - 30kB jpg All that remains of the old Webster Street is Webster Close, which at onetime must have connected with the modern Webster Street. It is suspected that number 36 stood on the patch of grass or is under the modern homes.

In 2009 the area around the modern Buchanan Street (behind the boarded gates) and Lawson Street (to the right of the grass) was ready for development all houses appear boarded up.

In 1911 Beatrice Moore lived at 16 Ewbank Street, Stockton. On the map above, Ewbank is the street to the west and parallel to Webster Street. Beatrice Moore married Lesley Milo Forsyth, the Australian soldier and grandson of Caleb Crompton, born 1821.

There is no evidence of the deaths of Lavinia and George PATTERSON between 1911 and 1950 in 'Find My Past', Ancestry or FreeBMD. However, a Lavinia PATTERSON married James ICETON in the third quarter of 1917 (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 165). But, a search of GRO death register and Commonwealth War Graves shows no George Patterson between the 1911 census and the remarriage. Did the family emigrate after the War?
