Emily CROMPTON

Mary's 'illegitimate' daughter, Emily has her own page.

Joseph Richard CHAPLIN - Mary and Richard's first child

Their son Joseph was born in the third quarter of 1877 (GRO ref Driffield 9d 319).

Joseph moved to Thornholme, one village from Carnaby nearer to Driffield, to live with the Robinsons, one enumerator building from Manor Farm.

It is speculated that William ROBINSON, although a 'worker', had a responsible and well paid status of farm manager and that, although his family had one female domestic servant, the remaining servants were employed by Manor Farm.

Joseph CHAPLIN appears last on the residential list, though not the youngest. This suggests that his employment, as agricultural labourer, was more menial than the younger 'horsemen'.

Sarah was a boarder in the third house on the enumerators walk from Percy Road. The white door is the first house in New Street, with Percy Road to the right. This suggests that Sarah lived in a house on the site of the present factory, which can also be seen in the photograph above.

Burnby Lane is to the left. The houses on this side of the road are Edwardian/post World War 1.

In 2010 Janet PARSONS, nee CROMPTON (See James CROMPTON, born 1807), lived in Burnby Lane.
