It is interesting to note that in the 1881 census Joseph Crompton was a visitor at his sister Mary's home in Carnaby. Mary Crompton⁄Chaplin's home appears to be a home–from–home for various branches of her family:

Joseph married married Elizabeth Clubley of Carnaby, a name frequently connected with the Crompton family, in the fourth quarter of 1881 and had started their own family. Joseph is still employed as a shepherd, but it should be noted that in the six year spread of his children's birth he has lived in at least four villages.

At sometime after the birth of the couples final son, and before the 1901 census Elizabeth died. William, Sarah j and Charles h have left home. Mary Cooper, though married, has moved in to 6 Eastgate Lane, Rudstone with her three children. Joseph seems to have settled in Rudston for some seven years.

| Although the census enumerator recorded the people as living in Eastgate Lane the 1911, 1:10,560
map, shows only the name Eastgate. However, the village has several other streets named as Lane. In fact,
Eastgate is a dead end and leads into a footpath, or lane.
