The children of Jane and Abraham Pears

John Swift PEARS - Jane and Abraham's first child

John Swift PEARS was christened on 02 August 1840 in the village of Jane and Abraham's first home at North Newbald. He died in Hull in the first quarter of 1865 at the age of 25 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 169), the family home being Holy Trinity, Hull since the 1851 census. It is possible that he wasn't married or had children.

Transcription error - Cabb for Caleb or his "known name".

There is no obvious record of Caleb Crompton in the 1891 or 1911 census in either Ancestry or Find My Past.

Elizabeth PEARS died in the fourth quarter of 1895 (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 148) aged 53 years. Caleb Crompton PEARS died in the fourth quarter of 1910 (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 130).

Caleb and Elizabeth PEARS' children

There are discrepancies between the 1881 census and the registration dates. The National Archives, in a webinar on 08 January 2022, explained that there were transcription errors, enumerator errors and poor mathematics when calculating ages for years of birth, with the exception of Esther Jane PEARS.

Elizabeth Johnson PEARS - Caleb and Elizabeth's first child

Elizabeth JOHNSON, the eldest child listed in the 1881 census, is assumed to be the daughter of Elizabeth PEARS who, being born out of wedlock, has taken her mother's maiden name. Elizabeth was born in the first quarter of 1860 (GRO ref: Scarborough 9d 297). However, the GRO record of births for the first quarter of 1868, show an Edmund Johnson PEARS, in Scarborough, which suggests that she was actually Elizabeth Johnson PEARS, and this was a transcription error or the enumerator didn't have room for both the Christian and surname names.

Alathea Viney Boar S 47 Housekeeper Dom Worker Suffolk, N[ot] K[nown]

The question has to be asked as to why this census entry is so imprecise? Why is Caleb Crompton PEARS listed as C.C. and Edmund as Edw when Edmund was 34 years old at the time of the census. Why hasn't a 34 year old no occupation? Why is Alathea Viney's birth been recorded as Not Known, unless this was a genuine case?

Swann Street extends to the River Hull and appears to be a light industrial area, probably rebuilt after the World War II bombing.

Esther Jane PEARS - Caleb and Elizabeth's second child

Esther Jane was born on 03 August 1866 (1939 Register and GRO ref: Scarborough 9d 302). She married James ATKINSON in the second quarter of 1889 (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 283). James Oats ATKINSON was born in the second quarter of 1868 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 205).

James Atkinson completed the form making several error with his answers, corrected by the enumerator. This suggests a poor education.

In 2024 Blake Street was no longer on the map of Hull. It may have been replaced by Blake Close, a series of modern red brick terraces. The original Black Street may have been destroyed by slum clearance or bomb damage.

Emma Elizabeth WARBURTON - second child of Christina and Arthur Henry (GRO ref: Oldham 8d 1053).

Emma was born in the third quarter of 1903 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 311). She married James WARBURTON in the fourth quarter of 1923 GRO ref: 8d 1053). The 1939 Register is confusing as Emma's details are unintentionally redacted but show her son James A WARBURTON, a ironworks assistant storeman, born 24 September 1924. Being that James WARBURTON is not recorded it is assumed he is dead. A James WARBURTON is recorded as dying in the third quarter of 1937 (GRO ref; Oldham 8d 711).

The couple had children:

Emma died on 22 December 1955 in Chorlton-cum-Hardy and is buried in Southern Cemetery.

John Swift PEARS, aged 35 and a miller by trade, departed for Quebec, Canada, as a steerage passenger, arriving there on 17 May 1913 on the RMS Virginian bound for Toronto, Ontario. The passenger list also records that he wasn't [medically] examined. His religion was defined as S.A. [Salvation Army?] rather than CofE and that he was to follow a different indecipherable trade in Canada. 1 However, the 1945 Canadian Voters List still records his trade as a miller. 2

The R.M.S. Virginian, run by the Allan Line, sailed from Liverpool to Quebec. She was built at the Belfast shipyard of Workman, Clark, & Co. in 1904, and was the first of two passenger liners crossing the Atlantic to be powered by steam turbines. Her maiden voyage from Liverpool to St. John, New Brunswick, began on April 6, 1905. On subsequent voyages, she ran the Liverpool to Quebec line for which she had been built.

It would appear that John Swift's wife and children sailed as steerage passengers on a different vessel - the SS Manchester Commerce departing from Manchester on 5 May 1913 bound for Quebec and onwards to Toronto. Annie E is recorded as being 30 years old, Walter B 9 and Annie E 2. They were all CofE. 3

Annie is recorded as making several crossings of the Atlantic. 4

The house and frequent Atlantic crossings suggest an affluence in Canada.

It is interesting to note that the swift family, originating in Kingston-upon-Hull in the UK chose to live in the High Park and High park - Swansea area of Toronto, Ontario. This is approximately 1km from the Humber River.
