Harriet, the second wife of Francis Wood
Harriet became the second wife of Francis (Frank) Wood when she married into a family based at Spring Head Farm, Anlaby, Hull since the 1851 census. This was the home of Francis, senior, his wife Betsy and their children.
Francis is first recorded in the 1871 census, which records his birth place as Cottingham, the district in which Anlaby is located.
Francis' first wife was Alice Maude Lee Beeley, born 2nd quarter of 1862 in Balby near Doncaster, in the West Riding of Yorkshire.

One year after the birth of Alice's second child, Harriet was the domestic housekeeper to Francis Wood. One wonders why someone who had been 'at home' for so many years had taken on the responsibilities as 'housekeeper'. It can only be presumed that after the death of her father and the sale of the property at Montague Terrace, Bridlington she had to find employment. However, three of her siblings were 'living on own income' at Ashbourne House, together with a family servant.

Family hearsay records that Frances and Harriet had one child, Henrietta. Although the two children, by Frances' first marriage, are recorded on the 1901 census Henrietta is not. At this point there is no evidence of her birth in the FreeBMD index from 1892 to 1912.

Springhead Farm
Spring Head is an area north-east of Anlaby, along Daringham Spring Bank, which at a later date became the general direction of a local railway line.
The censuses of 1851 to 1871 show several different entries with the name Spring Head Farm, so it becomes difficult to locate the actual farm on the map. The census suggest that it was a farm of 266 acres increasing to 300 acres in the 1881 census. Frances Wood senior employed up to six men and two boys, not all of whom lived on the farm. Of interest is the eight year old employed as a 'Bird ??nter', presumably someone to scare the birds.
By the time Frances and Harriet took over the farm the nature of the employment had changed, from labourer to the more specific sowman and waggoner.
