1811 info 2b, sheet 2

In the 1861 census there is no obvious record of Paulina and James Foster in a search of Nafferton's Enumeration Districts 11 and 12, suggesting they have moved. Neither is there an obvious Paulina Foster, born Nafferton 1837±1 or James Foster, born Nafferton 1831±1 in a search of 2000 Ancestry 1861 census records.

This is probably accounted for by the report in the Hull Packet and East Riding Times of 1857, which records a marital fracas between the Foster family and the Cromptons.  It would seem that Paulina had returned to her grandmother's home and the Fosters came to get her.  The resulting damage to property and the threat to Paulina resulted in costs plus fines or imprisonment.

Paulina and James must have got together again as two children, Martha and Madalina, were born some years later.

James Foster died in the first quarter of 1864  (GRO ref: Hull 10a 75).

The family of Martha amelia brignell Foster, Paulina's first child, and Charles Thomas

Martha amelia brignell Foster was born in the second quarter of 1862 in Sculcoates. (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 180). She married Charles Thomas in the first quarter of 1879 in Stockton, (GRO ref: Stockton 10a 75), and lived with Charles' widowed father.

Charles james Thomas Son Infant 7m Durham, Stockton

The 1891 census shows that the Fosters had moved to their own home with their three daughters. Charles had changed his employment from 'jobbing cutler' to 'showman', perhaps hinting at a more nomadic life.

The family of Madalina rosetta brignell Foster, Paulina's second child, and Thomas Cook

Madalina was born in the fourth quarter of 1865 in Sculcoates. (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 149)

In the 1871 census Madalina rose brignell is recorded with the surname of Paulina's second husband Edmond Hyldon.

Madalina R Hyldon Dau U 5 Yorks, Hull

There are no obvious entry for Madalina Foster/Hyldon, Paulina Hyldon and Edmond Hyldon, using wildcards, in the Ancestry 1881 census.

However, in the fourth quarter of 1882, at Stockton, Rose FOSTER married Thomas Cook, which confirms she is James Foster's daughter. They had two children.

In the 1901 census Paulina, now married for the third time and a Cariss, is now living with Madalina and her son in law.

Lavinia Thomas N-i-L U 16 General servant Employed Durham, Stockton

There is no obvious Thomas or Rose Cook in the Ancestry 1891 and 1901 census index.

There is no obvious marriage for Rose Cook in FreeBMD between 1900 and 1929 in all counties. There is no obvious death for Rose Cook between 1888 and 1929 in all counties.

In the St. Catherine's Index a Paulina Cariss died in Middlesbrough in the second quarter of 1915, aged 76. (GRO ref: Middlesbrough 9d 790)
