1807 Info 5a for James Crompton
Mary Frances Tate née Crompton

Mary Frances CROMPTON ...

... was born 3 May 1850 in Scarborough, but given as Burlington (Bridlington) in the 1891 census.

The inquest report, in the 1896 Hull Daily Mail (qv), includes 'Mary Tate stated that she was a sister of the deceased [Thomas Edmund CROMPTON] and lived next door to him.' This has helped find Mary Frances in the various census.

By 1861, after the death of her mother Martha, her father James, a groom, and Mary, aged 11, lived in Low Green, Hutton Cranswick. However, by 1871 her father, James, had taken the position of shepherd, lodging with the farm foreman at Ganstead, north-east of Hull. There appears to be no record of Mary CROMPTON in the 1871 census. FreeBMD does records Thomas being born out of wedlock in Hutton Cranswick:

Since Mary's husband Henry TATE, an agricultural labourer, was born in Hutton Cranswick in 1849, it is possible that this was where they met. Mary and Henry's marriage is recorded in 1875.

Before moving in to Preston, Hull, Mary and her family lived in Burstwick with Skeckling, a village 5km south-east of Preston, where the remainder of her family was born.

In the 1891 census Mary Frances is living in Carrick's Row, Preston, four census enumerator's doors from her brother Thomas. With Thomas being a widower and Mary a widow, occupied as a charwoman, it is possible that Mary was looking after Thomas and his family.

Thomas hanged himself on 24 March1896, four days after his father died in Anlaby Workhouse. The inquest report, of 1896, still records Mary Frances as Thomas' neighbour and, perhaps, looking after his family as she visited the house on the Monday morning the body was found.

The 1901 census shows Mary to be living alone, still in Preston

The children of Mary Frances

Thomas CROMPTON - first child of Mary Frances

The 1881 census suggests that Thomas was nine years old and born in Hutton Cranswick, part of the Driffield Registration District. If he was born in 1872, this was three years before the marriage of Mary and Henry. Thomas CROMPTON was born in the third quarter 1871 (GRO ref: Driffield 9d 273). In the 1881 census (See above) Thomas has the TATE family name.

Charles Henry TATE - second child of Mary Frances

Charles Henry was born in the fourth quarter of 1876 (GRO ref: Patrington 9d 286). Patrington is the administrative district for Burstwick.
