Crompton; The Grange farm, now held by Mr. Wm. Crowe; Thornwick Farm, the residence of Mr. Wm. Gardiner; Hartendale House, in the Occupation of Mr. J. M. Gray; and the farm in the hands of Mr. C. The 1861 census shows Hannah to be a widow and not yet married to Richard Huddleston, born Kilnwick but who has yet to be found in any census before 1871.

Interestingly Richard HUDDLESTON does not record his father's name or profession and lives in St Paul's Sculcoates, Hull, where the wedding took place. Nor does he seem to appear in any census until 1871. In the 1861 census George WREGHITT, aged 48, was a warehouseman and Parish Clerk born in Lund. Why was Hannah in Sculcoates? Why did the wedding take place in his parish?
By 1871 Hannah had started a new family with Richard Huddleston.

Modern day street maps show a new development to the south of the church along the old path to South Landing with streets called South Sea Road and South Sea Way.
Only two children from her previous marriage remained at home.
And, two children by Richard HUDDLESTON had been born one in the same quarter as the marriage. Was this the reason for a Sculcoates marriage away from Flamborough society?

After Hannah's death, in 1892, Richard went to live with his son John until his death in the first quarter of 1912 (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 467). The Hull Daily Mail, of Saturday 10 February 1912 reports
| The death of Mr. Richard Huddleston removes the oldest resident of Flamborough. He was a member of a family of thirteen of Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Huddleston, of Kilnwick, and only one brother now survives. All the members of the family reached the age of four score years, while the father and mother reached the ages of eighty-one and eighty-two years. Mr. Huddleston went to Flamborough over fifty years ago. He had two sons, one of whom is now in New Zealand, and he has resided with the other for many years. He farmed South Sea Farm, but gave that up some years ago. |

It is suggested that John and Mary Maud were living with their widowed daughter, who later remarried James P TAYLOR, in the fourth quarter of 1944 (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 997).
It is believed that Maud died in the first quarter of 1960 (GR ref: Bucklow 10a 190 (Cheshire)).
Oswald Cowton HUDDLESTON - John and Maud's first child
Oswald was born on 13 August 1891 (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 342). In the first quarter of 1923 he married Ada Mary CARNALL (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 909) who was born on 21 January 1901 at 84 All Hallows Street, Ordsall, Nottingham (GRO ref: East Retford 7b 16).
In 1921 he was still living with his parents.

Edith Agnes HUDDLESTON - John and Maud's second child
Edith was born in the third quarter of 1893 in Flamborough (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 345). She died at 5 Upper Range Farm, Halifax (now the Range Lane area) in July 1917 (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 490) aged 23. She was buried in Haley Hills, All Souls, Halifax 21 July 1917. She was unmarried.
Clifford HUDDLESTON - John and Maud's third child
Clifford was born on 03 April 1896 in Flamborough (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 363). In 1913 Clifford had moved from Flamborough and was living at 5 Range Farm, Halifax and worked in the Finishing Department at a mill, as an assistant piece drier.
In the fourth quarter of 1918 he married Nellie CARNELL (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 926) who was born on 14 September1896 in Ordsall, Nottingham (GRO ref: East Retford 7b 10), perhaps the sister of his brother Oswald's wife.

Robert Parker HUDDLESTON - John and Maud's fourth child
Robert was born on 11 July 1897 in Flamborough (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 382) and was christened in Flamborough on 01 August 1897. On 01 January 1924 he married Emma STEAD at Haley, Hill, All Souls, Halifax (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 621). There is no obvious record in the medal and pension index of World War One service.

Their known son was born on 21 July 1924 nearly seven months after his parent's marriage. He died in Halifax in August 1999 (GRO ref: Halifax C25C 54). There is no obvious record of the redacted child.
Robert died on 24 February 1973 (GRO ref: Halifax 2B1 744) and was cremated on 23 February 1973. Emma died on 12 January 1984 (GRO ref: Halifax 4 998). She was cremated on 18 June 1984.
Arthur HUDDLESTON - John and Maud's fifth child
The Crossley and Sons, Carpet Manufacturers record Arthur Huddleston being employed as a young person under 18 first employed on 10 January 1913. There is no record of his residence.
Arthur joined the Royal Navy as a 'boy' on 12 November 1914 and served on HMS Powerful until 28 February 1915. From there he made the first of many postings to the shore establishment HMS Vivid. Between 19 April 1915 and 30 August 1917 he was at sea, before returning the Vivid where he was promoted to Able Bodied Seaman (AB). Although his marriage certificate gives HMS Garland as his ship, his service record does not give a ship of that name. Between 15 November 1918 and 01 February 1919 he was serving of HMS Glorious after which he returned to HMS Vivid at the time of his marriage

He joined his final ship, HMS Lowestoft, on 23 November 1926. Though there is no obvious date of discharge he received a 'very good' conduct rating and a 'satisfactory' ability rating on HMS Lowestoft on 31 December 1927. The year to 31 December 1928 is marked 'commission'. Whilst his conduct was always 'very good' his ability rating varied between 'Supr' and 'Sat'. He received a war gratuity but there is no record of any war medals.

Their first son Stuart was born in the fourth quarter of 1919 (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 703). He may have married Mary PICKLES in the third quarter of 1941(GRO ref: Bradford 9b 314). He died on the 10 March 1972 at 12 New Road, Marlow Bottom (GRO ref: Wycombe 6a 1486) aged 52 leaving £12,125.
Their second son Arthur was born in the second quarter of 1922 (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 684). Marine Arthur Vernon PO/X3996, was killed in action on 18 February 1944 when HMS Penelope, a light cruiser, was torpedoed and sunk by U-410 on leaving Naples for Anzio: 417 of the crew were lost and 206 survived.
Their third son Peter was born in the third quarter of 1925 (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 627).
Their fourth son Colin was born in the third quarter of 1925 (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 627) and married Violet DRANSFIELD in the first quarter of 1957 (GRO ref: Halifax 2b 1505). He died in the third quarter of 2002 aged 69(GRO ref: Calderdale B2D 131).
Arthur HUDDLESTON died in the second quarter of 1962 (GRO ref: Calder 2b 484).

Gertrude was born on 05 March1902 in Flamborough (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 367) and was christened in Flamborough on 13 April 1902. In the fourth quarter of 1924 she married John Francis Forrest who was born on 11 April 1897 in Halifax (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 427).

Jessie was born in Flamborough on 26 May 1909 (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 971). In the 1921 census she was living with her parents in Halifax. In the fourth quarter of 1932 she married Leslie Rhodes SPENCE (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 1090). On 13 April 1939 Leslie Rhodes died in the Halifax General Hospital (GRO ref: Halifax 9a 531) aged 32. At the time the couple were living at 6 Asville Croft Pellon, Halifax.

An Ancestry record shows James Pearson being born on 11 October 1903 in West Derby, Liverpool and dying on 25 January 1987 in St Helens, Merseyside. However, there is no supporting GRO birth or death record. There is no obvious record of James Pearson Turner's birth or in the 1939 Registration.

HMS Delhi
HMS Delhi was a Danae-class cruiser that was laid down in 1917, launched in 1918 and commissioned for service in 1919, serving until decommissioning in mid-1945 due to extensive battle damage, and was to be scrapped in 1948 after lengthy war and peacetime service around the world. She served with the Royal Navy through the Second World War, from the Caribbean to eastern China. Delhi served in the Baltic as part of a wider multinational intervention in the Russian Civil War against the nascent Soviet republics. Departing the Baltic, Delhi returned to Britain and spent the next three years with the Atlantic Fleet. She was to be chosen in 1923, along with her sisters Danae, Dauntless, Dragon and Dunedin, for the Empire Cruise of the Special Service Squadron, representing the most modern and most powerful cruisers of the Royal Navy, as escorts to the battlecruisers Hood and Repulse. Returning in December 1924, she joined the 1st Cruiser Squadron with the Mediterranean Fleet in January 1925. After a brief ten-month detachment to the China Station, engaging in anti-piracy operations, she returned to the Mediterranean before being paid off to refit. |
