1852 Info 7a for John Harper Crompton |
Whyrill CROMPTON
| Whyrill was a science teacher at King Edwards School, who was born in Hyde and who died in
Southampton. Richard Perry, a former pupil now in Santa Barbara, writes 'I
remember Mr Crompton as a somewhat stern and imposing figure, but respected, especially
among those in his science classes. Unfortunately his nickname, Boggs, was rather
obviously derived from his initials'.
As with his father there is confusion about the spelling of his name, which, it is believed derives from his grandmother's brother. His GRO birth records the spelling Whyrill whilst his GRO death records Whyril. Right: Whyrill Crompton in the 1950s Source: Wendy EVANS, née CROMPTON |

| Whyrill, the third child of Whyrill was born in the second quarter of 1910. | |
| In fourth quarter 1935 he married Evaline KERSHAW ... |
| ... but the spelling of his name was abbreviated. | |
| Family information suggests that Hilda Evaline was known as Evaline. Again, there is confusion as to how her second name was spelt. | |
| Hilda Evelyn born in Glossop on 29 September 1908. Glossop is close to Hyde. |
Their children
Whyrill and Evaline had two daughters, confirmed by Registry entries showing their mother's maiden name as KERSHAW
| Margaret was born in the second quarter of 1939, and | |
| Barbara Anne in the third quarter of 1941. |

These entries suggest that, during war time, Whyrill's family moved from the registration district of Romford, Essex to the registration district of Bathavon in Somerset. Photographic evidence and Whyrill's death entry suggest that the family later moved to the Southampton area in the early 1960s. It is believed:
| Margaret (Maggie) first married David M REES (Dai), in the third quarter of 1963. |
Maggie met Dai met at Sheffield University in 1959. Maggie taught modern languages and Dai was a physicist working first with plastics and then computers in there very early days as a systems analyst. They adopted one child, Caroline, who was born in 1968. Maggie and Dai divorced in 1972.
| In the fourth quarter of 1972 Maggie married James Huggan, as Margaret J Huggan. | |

James, a staff surveyor with the Abbey National Building Society, already had two adopted children. After five or six years Andrew went to live with his mother and whilst Catherine, born in 1970, remained with Maggie and her father.
In 1994 Maggie divorced James and married George Graham in 1995. (GRO ref: Southwark 251, 237, C73, entry 119)
In 1992 Maggie moved to France, where she was joined by George and her mother Evaline, who died there in 1996 and whose ashes are buried in their garden. Source: Maggie Graham, by email. Maggie died on 18 August 2013, in France, as a result of an aggressive cancer.
| Barbara Anne married Allan KING in the first quarter of 1964 (6b 1536) |
Barbara now lives in Australia.
Whyrill's and Evaline's death
Whyrill died on 18 September 1981 at Carna, High Street Medstead Alton, Hampshire (Probate and GRO ref: Southampton 2c 1140), leaving an estate of not exceeding £25000. Family hearsay records Evaline dying in France in 1996.
| The entry in the GRO death index confuses the spelling of his name but confirms the
date of his birth. It is believed that this spelling is the one used by the family.
The confusion with Evaline's name continued to her death. GRO death records that Hilda CROMPTON died in March 1991 (GRO ref: Tameside 39 1717). There is no image of her entry. In 1974 the Registration District of Hyde was superseded by the Tameside Registration District. Right: Whyrill Crompton the day he died in 1981 Source: Wendy EVANS |
