Though married on 21 January 1893 (Vic BMD 1550/1893) and living in Moor Street, Fitzroy, the first Australian Electoral Rolls shows the couple lived in the familiar family Raglan Street address of 35 Raglan Street.

The Caldwell's then began their long association with Molesworth Street. This
was William?s home at the time of his enlistment and where his parents lived when he
was killed. Despite being registered as 'home duties' Elizabeth was a
successful dressmaker and ran a small business. They lived at Molesworth Street until

... when they moved to Chapman Street and were register there until 1928
Thomas' was the only name registered in 1921 and 1922. Chapman Street is actually
parallel to and behind Molesworth Street. Chapman Street was a vastly superior
quality of housing, but the Caldwell home was not very different to the one in
Molesworth Street.

| Their daughter, Effie moved out in 1922, when she married Richard Squire MASON at
the Parsonage, Congregational Church, 97 Bridge Road, Richmond on 10 April 1922. He
was born on 18 September 1900 Beaumaris. In the 1930 depression, Richard was
unemployed so the couple moved in with the Caldwell?s in Chapman Street between 1931
and 1937.

Chapman Street was their main home until Thomas, who had retired early because of a heart complaint, died in 1934, after which Elizabeth was registered there alone until the Roll of 1942.

However, in 1931 the couple were registered in Boronia with Thomas'
occupation being an iron merchant. During the 1920s the Caldwells purchased the
remote Boronia cottage as a weekender and holiday home. It was then quite remote and
rural. Thus the local Post Office was their mailing address. The Caldwell?s spent the
majority of their time at Boronia, returning to Chapman Street when Thomas became
more ill.

Neil Mason writes 'Before 1919 the family purchase a property on Burke Road, Boronia, Victoria which became a country home, which increasingly became Thomas & Elizabeth's home as Thomas' heart condition worsened. His occupation was now Iron Merchant: the source of his financial improvement. The country shack was an alternate Caldwell home until Thomas' death in 1934 after which Chapman Street was increasingly given over to Mason family. After early retirement when Thomas' health declined he spent most of his time at Boronia

After Thomas' death on 20 January 1934 (Vic BMD 645/1934), Elizabeth returned to Boronia where she was still registered in the year of her death and the MASONS took over Chapman Street, living there until 1966.

Source: Neil Mason As a footnote. The family story is that Elizabeth had a relationship with a man during the 1940s and he had her sign over the property to him and it was lost to Elizabeth sometime in the 1950s. Elizabeth died on 01 September 1958 (Vic BMD 10682/1958) in Melbourne North. |
With thanks to Neil Mason who provided the majority of the photos and the intimate family details.
