North Newbald

In about 1839 Jane married Abraham Swift PEARS, who was christened on 05 February 1814 in North Newbald. On 6/7 June 1841 the census records them as living on The Green, North Newbald. It was the last house enumerated before turning in to Eastgate. This suggests that this is the white house on the left.

The standard practice for 1841 was to round ages down to the nearest 5 years ie the range 20-24 years to 20, sometimes it was 19-24 years to 20. There are many examples of children's ages being exact. Occasionally a keen enumerator would put exact ages.

Jane's brother, Caleb, appears as the last member of the household - after the servants. It was thought that Caleb was in Australia at the time of the census.   11kb gif

Upper Union Street, Hull has been redeveloped. The 1851 census shows how the family moved before settling in Hull: to include Leeds and back to the Driffield area.

Abraham Swift PEARS was buried on 8 June 1859 at Holy Trinity Kingston-upon-Hull (GRO ref: Hull 9d 135).

Jane died in the fourth quarter of 1859 (GRO ref: Driffield 9d 181).

shows their movements around the County, until Jane returned to Nafferton.

Caleb Crompton PEARS is listed in 1851 census, aged 6, as living at Main Street, Driffield, as the grandson of Martha CROMPTON, age 66, now a widow. It is possible he was attending a Driffield school as a day boy.

The Nafferton Church christening records of James PEARS describes his parents:

Abraham Swift Pears and Jane who lived in Wandsford [due south of Nafferton], an accountant by trade. The ceremony was performed by Alexander Joseph.

There are no sign of the rest of the family in the Driffield district 1851 census. (See: 1819 Info 3)
