Edmund CROMPTON, born in the first quarter of 1858 (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 263), had left home by the age of 19. The 1871 census shows him working as an apprentice shipbuilder.

Edmond's first marriage

He has yet to be found in 1881 census but may, by that time, have followed his trade by moving to South Shields in County Durham. In late 1883 he married Dorothy Jane HUNTER in the fourth quarter of 1883 (GRO ref: South Shields 10a 1123), who was born in the first quarter of 1864 (GRO ref: South Shields 10a 560). However she died in the first quarter of 1891 aged 27 (GRO ref: South Shields 10a 426), presumably in child birth. The 1891 census shows Edmund to be a widower with a three month son Edmund R[ichardson] and two of his late wife's family living with him.

Edmond Richardson CROMPTON died in the first quarter of 1891 (GRO ref: South Shields 10a 770).

Edmond's second marriage

Edmund married, for the second time, Ellen GAULTER in the second quarter of 1894. (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 1071), who was born in the first quarter of 1870 (GRO ref: Garstang 8e 649) which contains the village of Stalmine.

The 1901 census shows that Edmund was an established shipwright on the west coast with a wife and family. The locations of the birth of his children shows his migration around the Fleetwood area.

GRO records Edmund as being born in the first three months of 1858 making him, in 1901, 43 years old. Whilst he gives the correct age in the 1871 census his 39 years, on the 1901 census, makes this Edmund four years younger. However the evidence of birth place and occupation suggest that this Edmund is the youngest son of Richardson and Hannah. Perhaps he reduced his age for the sake of his younger wife.

Their children

• James William CROMPTON was born fourth quarter 1894 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 726) and he died first quarter 1955 (GRO ref: Fylde 10c 311). In the fourth quarter of 1916 he married Elizabeth j Bickerstaffe (GRO ref: Fylde 10e 1067), who was born in the second quarter of 1889 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 719). She died in the third quarter of 1924 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 734).
• Sarah Isabel CROMPTON born fourth quarter 1896 (GRO ref: Garstang 8e 731), which contains the village of Preesall and Stalmine. In the second quarter of 1922 she married John Kewley (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 1601) who was born in the third quarter of 1897 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 740). Together they had one child Barbara, born in the fourth quarter of 1932 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 699). Sarah died in August 1987 (GRO ref: Macclesfield 35 529) and John in the fourth quarter of 1978 (GRO ref: Fleetwood 40 1432). Barbara married John w Ward in the third quarter of 1953 (GRO ref: Fylde 10c 539).
• Emily CROMPTON was born in fourth quarter 1899 (GRO ref: Garstang 8e 686). She married John G RICHARDSON in the fourth quarter of 1929 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 1137). Their children were:
  • Patricia born in the third quarter of 1935 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 505);
  • John b born in the second quarter of 1930 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 737)
  .
  It is possible that Emily died in the second quarter of 1976 (GRO ref: Salford 39 1044). This is the only registered death to correspond to her birth quarter.
• Rose ellen CROMPTON was born in the second quarter 1903 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 717). In the fourth quarter of 1928 she married Tom p Topham (GRO re: Fylde 8e 1130). Tom pearson Topham was born in Bradford in the second quarter of 1904 (GRO ref: Bradford 9b 142). In the 1911 census his family lived at 70 Addison Road, Fleetwood, just down the road from Rose ellen. Tom died in the first quarter of 1969 (GRO ref: Fylde 10c 376)
• Dorothy Jane CROMPTON was born on the 25 February 1907 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 378). In the third quarter of 1930 she married James Sanderson TAYLOR (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 1712) who was born in the third quarter of 1901 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 677). She died in February 1999 (GRO ref: Fleetwood and Fylde FY2A 5842 276). It is possible that James TAYLOR died in the second quarter of 1981 (GRO ref: Blackpool and Fylde 40 0514). There are no obvious TAYLOR/CROMPTON children registered in the Fylde area, where both parents died. There are, however, several TAYLOR/CROMPTON children born in other parts of Lancashire.
• Betsy CROMPTON was born in the first quarter 1909 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 663). There is no obvious record of a Besty marrying nor of a death. Both the GRO birth record and the 1911 census refer to her as Betsy. However, an Elizabeth CROMPTON married Harry WALSH in the fourth quarter of 1933 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 1387). Harry was born in the 3rd quarter of 1912 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 1192), and died in March 1993 (GRO ref: Blackpool and Fylde F24E 5812 256). No children have been found.

Ellen and Edmond's deaths

Ellen died in the fourth quarter of 1918, perhaps from the Spanish flue. (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 1300). Edmond died in the fourth quarter of 1934 (GRO ref: Fylde 8e 779).
