The origins of the CLUBLEY middle name
There is no precise information as to the origins of his middle name. Originally it was assumed that Stephen's middle name was taken from his mother's maiden name, but Liz Vine (researching the Huddlestons) has provided evidence that Stephen's mother was Hannah PICKERING. In 1841, the approximately 10 year old Hannah PICKERING was living with Sarah CLUBLEY, her aunt, on the Promenade in Bridlington Quay. Sarah CLUBLEY, born in Holy Trinity, Hull on 19 July 1799, was the second wife of James KINGSTON. Liz now thinks that Ann PICKERING (Hannah’s PICKERING's mother and Stephen's grandmother) and Sarah KINGSTON née CLUBLEY were sisters. This would also account for the closeness of the CROMPTON/HUDDLESTON and KINGSTON families and the use of the CLUBLEY name. At this moment the family tree looks like ...

In 1861 Stephen Clubley CROMPTON was a 14 year old described as a 'farmer's son' and presumably, though not at school, was living a life associated with that status.

His departure for New Zealand
Stephen Clubley CROMPTON may have been the steerage passenger on the Dona Anita, which arrived in Lyttelton, the port for Christchurch, on 3 January 1865. However the ship‘s passenger list doesn‘t give a great deal of detail and it is possible that there has been a transcription error recording Crompton SC as Crompton SE. This error has been taken forward by Canterbury Museum's records.
| Dona Anita Ship: 500 tons Captain: Davis Surgeon: Superintendent Sailed: London Arrived: Lyttelton (via Invercargill) January 3rd 1865 |
'Three previous visits [to 1867] had been paid to New Zealand by the Dona Anita, and she had made fairly good passages, considering she was only a vessel of 500 tons. On July 14 1863, she arrived at Lyttelton, 105 days from the Downs. Up to the time of sighting Kergukien Island she had a comfortable passage, but after that the weather was so bad that Captain Smith said that in all his thirty five years at sea he had never seen worse. On this occasion the barque bought out 45 passengers. In 1865 she was again in Lyttelton, arriving on January 7th, this time under Captain Davis.'

His Life in New Zealand
Little is known of Stephen Clubley CROMPTON‘s life in New Zealand.
His will was an "Election to Administer Estate of Testate Person", witnessed by a nurse six days before his death on 15 July 1924, at Ashburton in the Provincial District of Christchurch, and describes him as a Farm Labourer/ploughman. There is no evidence, in his will, of a wife or surviving children as his main beneficiary was his sister Emily Hyde CROMPTON/LEWIS, aged 69 at the time of his death. Leaving a "hut" (or "bach" pronounce "batch" as in batchelor) rather than a "house" and money to Samuel POYNTZ of Christchurch, a "Boarding House Keeper", suggests that, when he died at the age of 77, he had lived in the care of Samuel POYNTZ and the Hospital Board, rather than his family.
His death
The inscription on his headstone could be interpreted as evidence of his single life.
