Early indications suggest that Richardson farmed at Nafferton, before his marriage to Hannah and his move to Flamborough.

Richardson's first marriage
In the second quarter of 1842 Richardson married Agnes JOHNSON of Hotham (GRO ref: Howden 23 93) Hotham is the parish due west and 2 miles from North Newbald where three of Thomas Richardson Crompton's children had moved to, from Nafferton, to start farming.

There is no obvious relationship between the Johnson: the age of Richard Johnson and his witness signature suggest he was Agnes' brother.
However, her father and mother farmed at Mount Pleasant, which is the previous enumerators record to the Cromptons at Bullens Farm. Is this how Richardson met Agnes?

His second marriage
Richardson's second marriage was to Hannah PICKERING of Withernwick, Skirlaugh or Swine (adjacent villages between Hull and Hornsea with Skirlaugh (pronounced Skirler) being both a village and the broader Registration District) in 1845 and spent his life farming in the Flamborough area. There is a record for Hannah PICKERING being christened in Swine on 15 October 1826 to John and Ann PICKERING. A second record shows the same names but with a christening at Skirlaugh on 23 January 1825.

The census record Richardson and Hannah living at South Sea Farm and Moor Farm in the Flamborough area. However, South Sea [beach], South Sea Plantation and South Moor Farm appear to be the same.

Today South Sea Road leads to South Sea [beach]. South Sea Plantation remains (OS Explorer 301 GR TA234 694) but, to the east of the road, South Sea Way and South Sea Avenue have been built. South Moor Farm house is no more, having been converted to either The Timoreer Hotel or Cliffe House Farm (OS Explorer 301 GR TA 236 697).

His death
After Richardson's death, on 24 August 1859, at Flamborough, Hannah continued to farm in the Flamborough area. Sarah and John are not recorded in this census as they died young but where are they buried? Caleb CROMPTON, aged 8, was living with his great aunt Sarah KINGSTON née CLUBLEY in Sea Breezes, Bridlington Quay..

Liz Vine (Huddleston) has determined that the relationship between the CROMPTONs and KINGSTONs is through Hannah PICKERING's line. Her maternal aunt, after the death of her first husband Stephen CLUBLEY married James KINGSTON. Betsy Ann CROMPTON née KINGSTON was James' daughter. The CROMPTON/HUDDLESTON/KINGSTON families remain close in the Flamborough area.

In 1863 Hannah married Richard Huddleston and had two sons by him, the first in the same quarter as the marriage.

Interestingly Richard HUDDLESTON does not record his father's name or profession and lives in St Paul's Sculcoates, where the wedding took place. Nor does he seem to appear in any census until 1871. In the 1861 census George WREGHITT, aged 48, was a warehouseman and Parish Clerk born in Lund.
By 1871 Stephen and Thomas had left home for New Zealand. James, living with his mother and step father at South Sea Farm, the farm once owned by his natural father, followed in September of that year and Emily Hyde in in November 1879.

Hypothesis
The UK 1851 census shows the family farming the 124 acre South Sea Farm, Flamborough having enough productivity to employ one man. According to the 1861 census, following Richardson's death on 24 August 1859, Hannah ran the 130 acre North Moor Farm, Flamborough. Since her children were recorded as "farmer's children" and since she employed two "farm servant" a degree of wealth is suggested.
However sometime after 1861 Hannah married Richard Huddleston and four of her children emigrated to the Christchurch area of New Zealand. They are not listed as passengers on assisted passages. Two remained in the HUDDLESTON household until they too emigrated.
The question why the children left a potentially affluent environment has to be asked. In normal circumstances, it would be reasonable to expect the farm to pass to Richardson and Hannah's eldest child Stephen Clubley and for the younger members of the family to disperse. Stephen's emigration suggests that Hannah's property had passed to her new husband and that he intended the property to pass down his line: to John and George, his children by Hannah. However, the 1871 census shows Richard Huddleston taking care of two of Richardson and Hannah's children including Emily who eventually emigrated to New Zealand. However, Hannah being buried in Richardson's grave suggest that all was not a bed of roses.
