By 1871 Caleb had left home to work at Hall Garth, Lockington, a farm
midway between and west of the Beverley and Driffield road.
The house with 1685 carved datestone over door has 18th century extensions to rear. The two storey building is of red brick with a plain tile roof and 16-pane sashes with sills and wedge lintels. The immediate grounds contain an earthwork and buried remains of a medieval motte, and bailey castle, circa 1120, medieval moated site and fishponds. It is located 500m south of the village of Lockington. The castle was probably abandoned in the late 13th to 14th centuries when a new hall was erected on the castle bailey. The moated site was probably abandoned by the 17th century when the current Hall Garth was built in 1685. The motte has been known as Coney Hills since at least the mid 19th century. | Above: 1911 map of Brigham at 1:10560 showing the presumed homes of Caleb Hornsey in 1901 (red) and 1911 (yellow). This assumption is made because, in 1901 schedule 1 was Fordingham Bridge (off the map south-east along the road in the top right hand corner) and Caleb lived in schedule 2 in Brigham Lane. In 1911 it appears that the enumerator first recorded the homes on the southern side of the road, before turning at Elm Farm, schedule 68. |
