By Edwardian times Beverley Road, Hull had been developed with blocks of large houses with front and rear gardens, the grandest being to the west especially near Pearson Park. Beech Holme survives as Rockcliffe House. Built in 1864 as a private house but was taken over by the Blind Institute in 1891. A horse drawn tramway, later electrified, extended along Beverley Road. The development of the Hull and Barnsley Railway, together with its junction and Beverley Road station, was opened in 1885 for goods and passengers.

It is interesting to note that Elizabeth SOWERSBY/HORNSEY was in residence. It may be that, since she died in 1912, this may have been her last home.

Martha Amelia HORNSEY - Richard and Elizabeth's fourth child

Martha Amelia was born in the fourth quarter 1873 (GRO ref: Skirlaugh 9d 274). In the fourth quarter of 1895 she married Tom Benjamin FOWLER (GRO ref: Driffield 9d 607), who was, in 1891, her father's farm servant. Tom FOWLER was born in the fourth quarter of 1871 (GRO ref: Bridlington 9d 291). Martha Amelia, known as Amelia died in the fourth quarter 1935 (GRO ref: Driffield 9d 371). Tom died in the second quarter 1955 (GRO ref: Buckrose 2a 26).

William HORNSEY - Richard and Elizabeth's fifth child

A map of Bean Street, Hull in 1908 - 77kB jpg A map of Bean Street, Hull in 1908 - 77kB jpg William was born in the second quarter 1877 (GRO ref: Skirlaugh 9d 318) and died in the third quarter 1922 (GRO ref: Hull 9d 247). In the fourth quarter of 1902 he married Lizzie MILLHOUSE born (GRO ref: Hull 9d 247), from 66 Cumberland Street, Sculcoates and shown as an assistant butcher's servant in the 1901 census. There is no obvious record of her birth.

The 1908 map of west Hull located Bean Street along the Anlaby Road, just past the Workhouse. Anlaby Road, broad and tree lined, was lined with fine buildings, few of which survive, A few streets off were clearly developed for the commuting middle classes. In 1899 electric trams provided a penny fare from the Anlaby Road to Hull centre.

Bean Street was an example of terraced housing peculiar to Hull: a group of four or five terraced houses facing the road with other terraces running at right angles to the road and only accessible by a passage way. These high density houses appear to have only a small back yard, rather than adjacent houses which have gardens of varying sizes. Bean Street was laid out c.1869, and the 1871 Census lists many occupied houses on the street and terraces running off it. It developed north, eventually joining the older New Jarratt Street that ran south from Anlaby Road circa 1871. The Sir Henry Cooper Board School, opening in 1876, was situated in Bean Street. The Anlaby Road end of the street was served by The Bean Hotel, which opened c.1872, and was purpose built as a pub, being one of the first properties built on the east side of the street. The Hotel was demolished in 2005 to make way for the modern three-storey flats.

Since the houses developed towards the Anlaby Road it is assumed that number 133 was at the northern end of Bean Street, perhaps in the area of the new three-storey flats. The street has now been redeveloped.

The area of Hull, south of the Heddon Road, was taken up by Victoria Dock, built 1845-50. The timber yards and saw mills in the area south of Pelham Street reflect the importance of timber imports in Hull's economy. Victoria Docks was closed in 1970 and subsequently filled in and, from 1989, developed for housing. Victoria Dock was served by a railway line, with the main branch of the the Hull and Barnsley railway line being to the east of the map. Bombing in the Second World War and the demolition of most of the vast 19th century warehouses have changed the character of the area. Pelham Street no longer exists.

Richard was born in the first quarter 1881 (GRO ref: Skirlaugh 9d 307) and died in the fourth quarter 1961 (GRO ref: Whitby 1b 909). A Richard HORNSEY married Edith Ann TRUEPENNY in the third quarter of 1907 (GRO ref: Sculcoates 9d 431). However there is no obvious record in the 1911 census. Edith A HORNSEY died in the fourth quarter of 1963 (GRO ref: Whitby 1b 890) aged 83. She was registered Edith Annie in the 1st quarter 1880 (GRO ref: Boston 7a 430).
