The 1851 census reveals that Thomas LUCKUP was living with his sister, who married in 1816. However the IGI is not clear as to her birth. A christening is recorded as daughter of Mary and John LOOKUP on 02 April 1789 in South Cave. This matches her age in census.

This again places Thomas in the same street as Martha CROMPTON. That he was on the next census page suggest a continued close proximity.

It is possible that Thomas LUCKUP's income came from land left to him by his mother. Its location as described by the Rev Christopher Seymour and the churchwardens of Driffield church in 1764 as:

They say – “We have no Vicarage house, nor Glebe Land belonging to our Vicar, save one small yard containing sixteen perches of land with two small trees therein, one of ash and the other of elm; and a common right containing three acres, three roods and three perches of land, bounded on the east by a close of Peter Wilkinson’s, on the south by the highroad leading to Wansford, on the west by Widow LUCKUP’s common-right, and on the north by closes belonging to William Clitherow and Thomas Etherington; the fences are of thorns; ...

Thomas' death

Thomas died on 09 February 1873 aged 73 years (GRO ref: Driffield 9d 205) and is buried with his father in Nafferton churchyard.

His will was proven on 14 March leaving an estate under £100. There is no mention of benefactors.

In the third quarter of 1873, about six months after Thomas' death, Esther married Thomas BIELBY. (GRO ref: Driffield 9d 455)

The 1881 census shows a John H LUCKUP aged 11, defined as BIELBY's son-in-law. Being married to a cowman suggests that Esther had not inherited the Luckup land. What happened to the land? Did the income from his land go to his natural children?
